Brothers Bruce and Clay Matthews were both NFL stars in the 1980s and 90s, and between the two of them, four of their sons have played in the NFL, including Green Bay Packers all-pro linebacker Clay Matthews III, and Atlanta Falcons 2014 first round pick Jake Matthews.Luke Matthews, a 2018 four-star offensive tackle recruit, may well be following his brothers Jake, former Tennessee Titans center Kevin, and current Texas A&M center Mike, in playing for the Aggies at the next level. Matthews told 247Sports that he was offered today, and his brothers think he may wind up being the best player in the family.#TAMU has offered the youngest Matthews brother, class of 2018 OT Luke Matthews: http://t.co/064NJ58XNr pic.twitter.com/WP0cPIoCw2— Gigem247 (@GigEm247) August 4, 2015“A&M gave me an offer today,” he said on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound rising sophomore is the younger brother of former A&M linemen Kevin Matthews and Jake Matthews and current Aggie center Mike Matthews. His father is NFL Hall-of-Fame offensive tackle Bruce Matthews. Luke’s older brothers have described him as possibly being the best of the bunch when all is said and done, something that would be very impressive as Jake was a first-round draft pick and Kevin spent some time in the NFL as well. Mike is A&M’s starting center and should get a shot in the league after this year as well. While Matthews has a ways to go before National Signing Day 2018, and in recruiting anything can happen, it should be a pretty decent bet that he’ll be the fourth brother to strap on the pads for Texas A&M.[247Sports]
Is there a more thankless task in football than the role of second choice goalkeeper? This marginal figure watches from afar as his team triumphs or toils, resigned to the fact that even if they achieve success his contribution was little more than that of a cheerleader observing from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench. What little action one does experience comes thanks to the misfortunes suffered by others; an untimely injury or suspension perhaps, or else a run-out given almost out of pity in a cup clash of secondary importance. It takes a special temperament to accept this fate, which seems to contradict the very raison d’etre of a professional football player: that of actually playing the game of football.Spare a thought, then, for Kiko Casilla. In almost four seasons at Real Madrid the former Espanyol No.1 has played just 43 games, as Keylor Navas has been the undisputed star between the posts. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? In 2018 the 32-year-old’s prospects became even dimmer. Thibaut Courtois’s arrival relegated Casilla to third choice at the Bernabeu, reducing his chances of first-team football to that desperate grey area between slim and none. But the goalkeeper now has a new chance to shine: under the watchful eye of none other than Marcelo Bielsa, making waves with Championship leaders Leeds United.Casilla has now completed a move to Leeds on a free transfer, signing a four-year deal. It represents the first transfer business of the window for Bielsa, who has worked wonders with a side that has been completely transformed by the eccentric Argentine – spy scandals notwithstanding. One need not be an international master of espionage to see why the experienced shot-stopper has caught Bielsa’s eye. Throughout his career Casilla has forged a reputation as a solid, no-frills custodian, rarely putting a foot wrong between the posts despite his limited first-team action over the past few years. The influence of Madrid great Zinedine Zidane, moreover, has helped improve Casilla’s ability on the ball, making him an adept distributor and thus a perfect fit for quick-passing, high-pressing Leeds. From Leeds’ point of view too, the addition of an internationally renowned keeper is a logical step. Current No.1 Bailey Peacock-Farrell is just 22, and while the Northern Ireland international has come on in leaps and bounds he is still prone to bouts of inconsistency and the occasional disastrous mistake.Bielsa had hoped to keep the pressure on Peacock-Farrell through deputy Jamal Blackman, a former England youth international and one of Chelsea’s immense army of loanees that criss-crosses the football world. Blackman, however, was forced to return to Stamford Bridge in November after breaking his leg in an Under-23 match, a bitter blow for the player who, as Bielsa admitted, was on the verge of pushing his way into the first team.Casilla will arrive not as Peacock-Farrell’s deputy but as direct competition for a starting spot. The prospective move has already won the approval of one former Leeds favourite. “He has got a wealth of experience, hasn’t he?” Noel Whelan signalled to the BBC .“He has been at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Look, if that’s going to be happen, it’s fantastic. We need strength in depth in that area.”Leeds are also looking forward. If the Whites can repeat their brilliant form over the first half of the season and clinch a much-desired return to the Premier League, a goalkeeper of Casilla’s stature and experience will be invaluable in one of the world’s most demanding divisions. For Casilla, Elland Road represents an intriguing challenge. The player has been possibly football’s most privileged spectator over the last four years, generally looking on from the sidelines as Madrid have won three consecutive Champions Leagues. Those medals hang proudly over his mantelpiece, even if it was Keylor Navas who wore the gloves. At Leeds, however, he will have the opportunity to show the brilliant form week-in, week-out that convinced Madrid to take the former Blancos trainee back to the club after shining at Espanyol. Both Casilla and Leeds have everything to gain from such a partnership, as Bielsa’s boys go all-out for a return to the promised land of the Premier League over the next few months.
Sheffield United missed the opportunity to move back into the automatic promotion places in the Championship as they lost 1-0 at Swansea City. The Blades slipped to third on Friday as Norwich City won, but they had the chance to respond on Saturday and, with Leeds United beaten, could have moved within a point of top spot. However, Chris Wilder’s men passed up clear openings in the first half at the Liberty Stadium and were duly punished as Oliver McBurnie netted for Swansea 25 minutes from time. Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick were both profligate before the break for the Blades, the former shooting too close to Erwin Mulder with the goal gaping before the latter directed a poor header wide.Swansea were much improved following the restart and got their reward when Nathan Dyer squared for McBurnie to slide the ball into the net.Dean Henderson made a superb double-save to keep the visitors in the match, brilliantly turning away a curling strike from reported Leeds target Daniel James after blocking an initial shot, but his efforts were in vain.
Jurgen Klopp says Jamie Vardy remains a threat ahead of the Reds’ meeting with Leicester on Wednesday – but his side have made it too easy for the England striker in the past.Vardy capitalised on a catastrophic error from defender Lucas Leiva at Anfield in September 2016 to score from close range, pulling the visitors back into a game they had looked out of.Liverpool took back control in the second half, eventually running out 4-1 winners, but the manager says that, in spite of Leicester’s Premier League struggles this season, Vardy is still a threat. But a few times we made it pretty easy for him,” said Klopp.“Lucas Leiva, did he get an assist? I could have scored that goal!”Jamie is a fantastic striker, and you can see each fiber of his body is really on this decisive situation.“He always waits for the balls over the shoulder, now he’s involved more in defending than he maybe was in the past, but it doesn’t make him easier to defend to be honest.”Vardy scored one of the goals of the season against Liverpool in February 2016 en route to Leicester’s historic Premier League title success, crashing the ball home on the half volley from a long way out to secure a 2-0 win for the Foxes.”It’s a threat,” reiterated Klopp. “I don’t exactly know why Jamie has such a good record against us, but I would say minus one goal because that was the only one he shouldn’t have scored.“The best one he scored at Leicester was when they won the title, yes? He was passed the halfway line and shot, right? Yeah, that was a good year for them.”Very, very good player and that’s why he’s such a threat.”The Reds may have seen their lead at the top of the table cut to a single point by the time they run out against the Foxes, if champions Manchester City pick up a win away at Newcastle on Tuesday night. Tunisia booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals with a 3-0 win on Thursday, ending surprise package Madagascar’s outstanding run.Alain Giresse’s side might have expected a serious test against tournament debutants Madagascar, who topped their group ahead of Nigeria and then upset Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties in the last 16.But Tunisia were dominant in Cairo, squandering chance after chance before Ferjani Sassi’s scruffy strike broke Madagascar’s resolve. Michigan and Michigan State are set to meet in just about five minutes in what’s easily the most hotly-contested rivalry game in college football this Saturday. They started going at each other two hours early, in fact.Earlier this morning, we showed you video of Michigan State’s players attempting to do their “walk” while a few of Michigan’s players were warming up on the field. When neither team budged, there was an altercation. After the altercation, Michigan linebacker Devin Bush was so fired up that he headed to Michigan State’s logo at midfield and attempted to damage it with his cleats. Now, FOX has released a close-up video of Bush getting into a war of words with Michigan State’s players. It’s something. In the clip, Bush is inconsolable. He appears ready to take on Michigan State’s entire team himself:While this kind of passion is awesome to see, Bush is going to get a lot of criticism for taking things too far and trying to damage the team’s logo on the field.Michigan and Michigan State are set to kick off at Noon ET. It’ll be the game of the day.

With both teams currently ranked inside the top 15, this showdown will certainly be intriguing.Michigan is playing its best football lately, picking up wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State in convincing fashion. As for Penn State, its victory over Iowa was huge for the team’s morale, especially after losing consecutive games earlier in the season. The Nittany Lions have the firepower to keep pace with the Wolverines, yet ESPN believes they will fall short.According to the FPI, Michigan has a 67.5 percent chance of winning the game. Both programs rely heavily on their quarterback to make impact plays, as Shea Patterson and Trace McSorley are having solid seasons. However, this game could come down to whichever defense can shine.Penn State and Michigan are set to kick off at 3:45 p.m. ET from Ann Arbor. The game will be on ESPN.

Some other top coaches from years past have weighed in on the decision Swinney May have to make in a few years, and think the choice is pretty clear, though.Longtime Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden, and former Georgia and Miami head coach Mark Richt believe Dabo Swinney will stay at Clemson. The two college football greats spoke to The State about the oft-discussed predicament. Bowden has personal experience with this exact thing; he turned down the chance to leave FSU for Alabama in 1990, as Florida State was becoming a college football power.Like Swinney, Bowden grew up in Alabama and dreamt of coaching the Tide. And, as he suspects Swinney feels, he came to learn another place was the right one for him.“Let me say this — all of my life I wanted to coach at Alabama. I was raised there,” Bowden told The State. “I went there out of high school but I didn’t stay. But that was always my home and I really felt like I’d probably have to go back there one day. But as time grew by it was very obvious to me Florida State is where I ought to be.”[…]“He’s got that thing going pretty good. And it’ll always be his. It’ll be his,” Bowden said. “Not go to Alabama and you’re second to Saban or second to coach Bryant. That’s something Dabo has to decide. It’s natural him being an Alabama graduate, being raised in Alabama, for that kind of talk to come up. It’s strictly conversation.”Richt, who is very familiar with both Alabama and Swinney’s Clemson from his time in the SEC and ACC in recent years, is set to be an analyst for the new ACC Network. His take is simple: “why would you leave Clemson?”“Why would you leave Clemson the way things are going right now?” Richt said. “I’d be shocked to see Dabo Swinney anywhere other than Clemson for the rest of his career, to be honest with you.”Swinney’s new contract includes a clause making it more expensive for Alabama to poach him, while having no such deal if the NFL was to come calling. That he would agree to it should make Clemson fans feel better, but it is not there for no reason either. Still, it seems like Clemson is doing everything right in order to hold on to its elite coach, through whatever opportunities pop up.[The State] TAMPA, FL – JANUARY 09: Head coach Nick Saban of the Alabama Crimson Tide talks with head coach Dabo Swinney of the Clemson Tigers after the Tigers defeated the Crimson Tide 35-31 in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Raymond James Stadium on January 9, 2017 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)Will Dabo Swinney eventually be the one to replace Nick Savanna at Alabama? It is the question that has been on the mind of just about everyone in college football, since Swinney elevated himself to the top tier of the sport’s coaches.Swinney is pretty clearly the best coach in Clemson history. He has turned what was previously a solid if inconsistent ACC squad into an Alabama-level superpower. He can stay with the Tigers for his entire career and build on an unmatched legacy at that school if he wants. He is, of course, also an Alabama native, and an Alabama football alumnus. The connection to the job is impossible to deny.Swinney has said what he needs to when asked about the possibility. However, it is easier to say that you won’t take over the Crimson Tide than it will likely be to turn down a blank check from the school.

Clearly, like many, ESPN is skeptical on Michigan. The Wolverines have been on the cusp of greatness under coach Jim Harbaugh, but haven’t been able to get over the hump. Since taking over in 2015, Harbaugh has led UM to three 10-win seasons in four years. But Michigan has also lost three straight bowl games including last year’s thumping in the Peach Bowl against Florida. What will it take for the team to finally meet expectations? The obvious answer is to fix the offensive issues. Shaky quarterback play — in addition to questionable play calling — has been a problem for Michigan the past few seasons. If they are able to make the necessary changes, the Wolverines have the talent to be a national title contender. Virat Kohli’s Team India: From mute golden goose to vocal stakeholderThe idea of a players’ association was suggested by the the R.M. Lodha committee when the country’s top court put a Committee of Administrators in charge following BCCI’s failure to implement administrative reforms.advertisement Reuters New DelhiMay 8, 2019UPDATED: May 8, 2019 13:46 IST India captain Virat Kohli (IANS photo)HIGHLIGHTSCOA member Anshuman Gaekwad said the paper work for players’ association was nearly completeGaekwad said the idea was tried out twice earlier but it did not workFormer India opener Arun Lal said, the idea did not work out because the BCCI was against itThe goose that lays the golden eggs in Indian cricket is finally going to have a say in the running of the game in the country with a national players’ association inching closer to becoming a reality. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has traditionally abhorred the idea of a players’ association, regarding it completely unnecessary and potentially troublesome. On rare occasions when such a body was mooted, top players usually stayed away as joining it would mean incurring the wrath of the world’s richest cricket board.Things changed two years ago when the country’s top court put a Committee of Administrators in charge following the board’s failure to implement administrative reforms suggested by a panel led by former chief justice R.M. Lodha. One of the key recommendations of the Lodha committee was to form a players’ union and subsequently a steering committee was formed to facilitate the process.Former India batsman Anshuman Gaekwad, a member of the committee, said the paperwork was nearly complete and before long Virat Kohli and his India team mates would have a voice in things that affect their career.”We’re going to have an association very soon. It’s very important for the players,” Gaekwad told Reuters by telephone.A gutsy opening batsman who played 40 tests between 1975-85, Gaekwad regretted not having such players’ body during his cricketing days.”We tried it twice in the 1970s but it did not work out,” he added.BCCI Chief Executive Rahul Johri did not immediately respond to call and message seeking comment.advertisementA stronger effort was made in the early 2000 when Indian Cricket Players’ Association (ICPA) was floated with former captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi as its president. But the ICPA too failed to attract the top players and fizzled out.”It did not work out because the BCCI was against it,” former India opener Arun Lal, who was the ICPA vice-president, told Reuters from Kolkata.”The players were scared of the board, which is only natural. It’s hardly expected of a young cricketer to do something if the secretary of his state association warns him against it.”The board always had an antagonistic approach to a players’ association. They saw it like a trade union movement.”Lal, who played 16 tests for India, said a players’ body was integral to the game across the globe.”More than anything else, the cricketers then become responsible for their game,” the 63-year-old added. “At the moment, a cricketer is just a player. But once an association comes into being, he’s a partner in taking the game forward.”Players then become more responsible and aware of their duty to retain cricket’s more than 200 years of legacy and not bring disrepute to the game.”The Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA) welcomed the possibility of having an Indian players’ body in the coming months.”The existence of a body that can collectively represent the players in India, the world’s biggest cricket economy, is an important step forward for the game,” the global players’ representative body said in a statement.”It is critical that players are involved in the development and governance of any association set up to collectively represent them, in order to ensure its effectiveness,” FICA executive chairman Tony Irish said.”We would welcome a player-established Indian cricketers’ association, which meets our membership and minimum standards requirements, into FICA and as part of the global collective of the world’s cricketers.”Also Read | MI played a nice brand of cricket in our conditions: CSK coach Stephen FlemingAlso Read | Heartening to see a great bowling performance: Sachin Tendulkar after MI beat CSKAlso SeeFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
