Ferguson’s best United XI

first_img Here, we have a selected possibly the best United XI during Ferguson’s tenure. Goalkeeper: Peter Schmeichel. Boils down to a choice between Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, with hardly anything between them. Schmeichel (five titles, one European Cup) gets the nod, but only because he came before Van der Sar (four titles, one European Cup) and broke the mould. Right-back: Gary Neville. Paul Parker was an essential component of Ferguson’s first title-winning team but Neville is the stand-out candidate. Loyal, brave – a bit of a pain sometimes. But committed and pretty good too. First-team career lasted 19 years and 602 appearances. Centre-half: Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic. Ferguson has admitted to making one of his few mistakes in allowing Stam to leave in 2001. Serbian Vidic holds the rare distinction of being confirmed a United player on Christmas Day. Struggled at first but has gone on to become one of the world’s best defenders. Left-back: Patrice Evra. Few could quibble if this spot went to Denis Irwin, or even Phil Neville. Evra is slightly better though, especially in an attacking sense. Right-wing: Cristiano Ronaldo. Now the arguments begin. David Beckham is an obvious choice here and his efforts deserve due mention. But someone who was crowned the world’s best player during his time at United – and is still rated in the top two – has to have a place. Ronaldo’s trickery was not to everyone’s taste. Forty-two goals in a single season certainly was. Central midfield: Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. Keane’s duels with Patrick Vieira were the stuff of legend and performance in the 1999 Champions League semi-final against Juventus in Turin, when he was already booked and out of the final, will stand comparison with any. When great players such as Xavi and Edgar Davids are asked to name the man who made United tick, Scholes is the name they always come up with. Left-wing: Ryan Giggs. Ferguson likened Giggs to “a piece of paper blowing in the wind” when he first saw him as a schoolboy. Nearly 900 appearances later, the Welshman is still going strong. Barring the first FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1991, Giggs has played a part in all Ferguson’s successes. Centre-forward: Wayne Rooney and Eric Cantona: Arrived a teenage sensation, then condemned to live in Ronaldo’s shadow, Rooney subsequently blossomed. Carried United into their post-Ronaldo season. More than any single player, Cantona transformed United from nearly men to champions. Arrived with the swagger of a man destined to usurp Denis Law as the new king. Fifteen years after his departure, he is still adored. After 26 years at Manchester United, boss Sir Alex Ferguson announced he was to retire from his post at the end of the season.center_img Press Associationlast_img read more

Texas A&M Football Offered 15 Year Old Brother Of Aggie Linemen Jake, Kevin, And Mike Matthews

first_imgTexas A&M QB Kyle Allen dropping back for a pass.COLLEGE STATION, TX – SEPTEMBER 12: Kyle Allen #10 of the Texas A&M Aggies drops back to pass in the first half of their game against the Ball State Cardinals at Kyle Field on September 12, 2015 in College Station, Texas. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images)While the Mannings get most of the press, there may not be a better football family than the Matthews clan. Brothers Bruce and Clay Matthews were both NFL stars in the 1980s and 90s, and between the two of them, four of their sons have played in the NFL, including Green Bay Packers all-pro linebacker Clay Matthews III, and Atlanta Falcons 2014 first round pick Jake Matthews.Luke Matthews, a 2018 four-star offensive tackle recruit, may well be following his brothers Jake, former Tennessee Titans center Kevin, and current Texas A&M center Mike, in playing for the Aggies at the next level. Matthews told 247Sports that he was offered today, and his brothers think he may wind up being the best player in the family.#TAMU has offered the youngest Matthews brother, class of 2018 OT Luke Matthews: http://t.co/064NJ58XNr pic.twitter.com/WP0cPIoCw2— Gigem247 (@GigEm247) August 4, 2015“A&M gave me an offer today,” he said on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound rising sophomore is the younger brother of former A&M linemen Kevin Matthews and Jake Matthews and current Aggie center Mike Matthews. His father is NFL Hall-of-Fame offensive tackle Bruce Matthews. Luke’s older brothers have described him as possibly being the best of the bunch when all is said and done, something that would be very impressive as Jake was a first-round draft pick and Kevin spent some time in the NFL as well. Mike is A&M’s starting center and should get a shot in the league after this year as well. While Matthews has a ways to go before National Signing Day 2018, and in recruiting anything can happen, it should be a pretty decent bet that he’ll be the fourth brother to strap on the pads for Texas A&M.[247Sports]last_img read more

Tanker Woes Overshadow Healthy Dry Cargo Market

first_imgzoomImage Courtesy: Flickr-Kees Torn under CC BY-SA 2.0 license Severe headwinds in the historically low tanker market dampened the performance of the healthy dry cargo market in the third quarter of 2018, pushing Danish shipping company Norden to a loss of USD 12 million. The loss is being reported against last year’s Q3 profit of USD 4 million. In the third quarter of 2018, Norden’s dry operator generated a contribution margin of USD 11.5 million and an adjusted result of USD 2.3 million. The result is an improvement year-on-year compared to last year’s loss of USD 2.1 million. The dry owner recorded an adjusted result of USD 4 million for the quarter and USD 13 million for the first three quarters of 2018.Based on the forecasts of continued low fleet growth, Norden expects rates in 2019 to remain at a similar level as this year, with global macro-economic conditions likely be slightly weaker. However, fleet growth continues to be at manageable levels – especially for Supramax and Panamax vessels, the company said.During the third quarter, Norden entered into agreements with Japanese tonnage providers to charter in two 82,000 tdw Panamaxes over a 5-year duration with delivery in 2020 and purchase options. The vessels will be of eco design and fitted with scrubbers.Norden’s tanker business posted a loss of USD 18 million, much wider than last year’s equivalent of USD  1 million. The company’s Handysize tankers generated daily earnings of an average of USD 9,062, while daily earnings in the MR fleet amounted to USD 10,347.The product tanker market suffered severe headwinds during the quarter and spot rates were the lowest seen in a decade. The main factors pushing the market down were declining product imports in Asia, South America and Middle East in combination with significant competition from crude vessels due to low rates in that market, Norden explained.Nevertheless, the company expects slowing supply growth and normal seasonality to trigger rate increases in the fourth quarter.“At the beginning of the fourth quarter rates for crude vessels have improved and there have also been positive signs for product tanker rates in the Atlantic. In 2019, additions to refinery capacity, low fleet growth and a better crude tanker market are expected to lead to improving product tanker rates. In addition, the introduction of the IMO sulphur cap on emissions from bunker fuel is expected to further support the market balance starting in the second half of 2019,” the company said.Overall, for 2018 the Danish shipowner maintains the expectations for the adjusted result to be USD 0-30 million.Image Courtesy: Flickr-Kees Torn under CC BY-SA 2.0 licenselast_img read more

Actionentertainers need intelligent script

first_imgMumbai: Action-entertainers are Hrithik Roshan’s favourite genre but the actor says it is important to have a good script for such films to work at the box office. Hrithik, fresh from the success of Super 30, had to go through a physical transformation to fit into the role of an intelligence operative gone rogue in Sidharth Anand’s War that pits him opposite Tiger Shroff. “It feels great to be back (in this space). It is my favourite genre. I love action-entertainers, I have had very few chances to do them but whenever I have had the chance, I have revelled in it,” Hrithik said. The actor, 45, said he had a lot of trust in both Tiger and Anand, with whom he previously collaborated on Bang Bang. “Actually, I only want to do action entertainers. But it is very hard to get a good script, it’s hard to write one. It seems easy as it has action, dance and entertainment but you need to have an intelligent script in the genre,” he added. Asked about the lack of multi-hero projects, Hrithik, who in the past has shared screen space with Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Farhan Akhtar, said such films are possible only with secure actors. “It takes two very secure and trusting actors and director to come together to make this kind of a film. It is sad that we have a lot of insecurity in our industry and not many people trust each other.” “Here we did not have that problem as Tiger is coming from a very secure place, Sid (director) is somebody we both trust. We all came together to make a good film. The film, also starring Vaani Kapoor, will hit cinemas on October 2.last_img read more

Haryana election BJP MPs seek tickets for kin

first_imgGurugram: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to release its list of candidates on September 29, the first day of Navratra, party source said here on Thursday. At a time when there are predictions that the party will give its best shot in the Haryana assembly elections till date, various top leaders including sitting MPs are now seeking tickets for their kin. The negotiations are going on even though the saffron party already had set a strict guideline that no ticket will be given to a member that promotes dynastic politics. Sources said party’s sitting MP from Gurugram, Rao Inderjit Singh has taken a tough stance, demanding a ticket for his daughter Aarti Rao. Sources further indicated that Inderjit has made it known to the party high command that if necessary he was also willing to compromise certain posts which were given to him by the party. The importance of Rao Inderjit can be gauged from the fact that his recent win in the Lok Sabha polls was his fifth win as an MP. Moreover, he has won as an MLA from Rewari area. Singh is a son of Rao Birender Singh, who was the former Chief Minister of Haryana and also an MP from Gurgaon at a time when it used to come under the Lok Sabha seat of Mahendargarh. After the creation of the Haryana state in 1966, Mahendargarh Lok Sabha seat first voted for Rao Birendra Singh, father of present MP Rao Inderjit Singh in 1971. He won the Lok Sabha seat couple of times and eventually retired when he was defeated in the 1996 general elections. Sources also indicated that Kishan Pal Gurja is also demanding a ticket for his son. The significance of 62-year-old Gurjar in BJP dates back much longer than the two Lok Sabha elections he has fought and won convincingly for BJP in Faridabad. In 1990, Gurjar took a major risk when he shifted from Indian National Lok Dal which at that time was at its peak in Haryana to BJP, a party which virtually had no presence in the region. In 2009, when BJP was in the midst of one of its toughest phases in Haryana politics Gurjar was made the Haryana BJP president. In 2014 he fought his first Lok Sabha elections and won convincingly. A feat that he carried on with a much greater margin in 2019 elections.last_img read more
